Nice group of 8 Silver Age Marvel Strange Tales comics from 1967–1968, featuring Doctor Strange and Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

This group includes issues #159, #160, #161, #162, #163, #166, #167 and #168. These are from the final stretch of the original Strange Tales series and include several notable Jim Steranko Nick Fury/S.H.I.E.L.D. stories and covers. Steranko\'s S.H.I.E.L.D. work from this period is particularly well known for its innovative layouts and late-1960s graphic style.

Issue highlights:

• Strange Tales #159 – August 1967
  Features Captain America alongside Nick Fury. This issue contains the first appearance of Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who became an important recurring S.H.I.E.L.D. character and Nick Fury associate. It also begins the “Spy School” story.
• Strange Tales #160 – September 1967
  Nick Fury and Captain America continue together in “Project: Blackout.” The issue includes Jimmy Woo and begins a confrontation involving an alien threat at the Statue of Liberty. Jim Steranko handled the Nick Fury story\'s writing and art.
• Strange Tales #161 – October 1967
  Continues the Blackout storyline with Captain America, the Thing and Mister Fantastic, and leads into the Yellow Claw storyline. Please note that this particular copy is heavily damaged, with a large portion of the front cover missing. It should be considered a reader/filler copy.
• Strange Tales #162 – November 1967
  Continues Nick Fury\'s battle against Yellow Claw and includes the famous S.H.I.E.L.D. high-tech/spy-era flavor associated with Steranko\'s run.
• Strange Tales #163 – December 1967
  Features the Nick Fury story “And the Dragon Cried... Death!” and has a striking Jim Steranko cover.
• Strange Tales #166 – March 1968
  Late-run Doctor Strange/Nick Fury issue featuring Doctor Strange prominently on the cover and continuing both characters\' separate stories within the split-title format.
• Strange Tales #167 – April 1968
  One of the standout issues in the group. Features a memorable Jim Steranko S.H.I.E.L.D./American flag cover and the conclusion of the Yellow Claw storyline. Steranko used unusually ambitious page layouts during this sequence, including an elaborate multi-page spread.
• Strange Tales #168 – May 1968
  Final issue of the original Strange Tales run featuring Doctor Strange and Nick Fury together. After this issue, the two features moved into their own titles: Doctor Strange continued with #169 and Nick Fury moved into Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Condition

These are raw, ungraded Silver Age comics and show varying degrees of age and handling wear.

The books exhibit combinations of spine wear, creasing, edge and corner wear, surface rubbing, small tears/chips and age-related wear. Some present considerably better than others.

#161 is by far the lowest-grade copy and has major front-cover damage with a substantial portion missing.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as the photos are considered an important part of the condition description. I have not professionally graded these comics and prefer to let buyers make their own assessment from the photographs.
