Exclusiveto the British Museum, a set of four characterful pin badges inspired byancient Egypt. My wife is British and these were in her father’s things. No oneis really sure when he got them or how old they are. But they’ve never beentaken off of their original cards.
Thefour enameled badges represent ancient Egyptian god Anubis, a winged scarab, anAnkh, and a Blue Hippo.
TheAncient Egyptians were polytheistic; they are thought to have believed in manygods and goddesses who influenced every aspect of people’s lives.
Anubisis one of the most well-known of the ancient Egyptian gods. Worshipped as theguardian and protector of the dead, Anubis was usually depicted as a jackal (along-legged wild dog) or a wolf.
Thescarab dung beetle was associated with the rising sun and eternal existence.Ancient Egyptians witnessed scarab beetles pushing balls of dung up hills andbelieved the sun to be propelled around the earth in the same way; pushed by agiant beetle. Scarabs were seen as powerful amulets, as they symbolizedregeneration.
TheBlue Hippopotamus represented life, rebirth, chaotic danger, and thelife-giving waters of the Nile, the protective goddess Taweret, and thedangerous wild forces of the natural world.
TheAnkh represented life, eternal existence, and the breath of life.
