Two Antique German Beer Stein by A.Diesinger Castle and Soldiers c.1890s
: : These two antique German steins were made in Germany by Adolph Diesinger in the 1890s. A.Diesinger is one of the most collectible beer stein manufacturers. His designs are unique and hard to confuse with anything else. Some collectors consider them "quintessentially German". Adolph Diesinger - the owner of the factory - was at the same time the artist who created these designs - very close to "naive art" to the point of being kitschy.
The stein on the left is made in the relief technique and shows 2 mounted soldiers of Renaissance times drinking beer served by a tavern maid. This subject - soldiers quenching their thirst on the go - was very popular with art painters of different times. Quite possibly, this is a copy of a painting of a historical genre.
The stein on the right is made in the incised technique - A.Diesinger made only 4 models in this technique. It shows a pastoral scene of a village with a castle up the hill.
The stein on the left is 9" tall to the top of the thumblift, and the one on the right is 8.5", both 0.5 L capacity. Very nice and impressive drinking vessels.
Both steins are in excellent condition.
