Up for sale is a rare, authentic historical grouping of TWO (2) World War I-era U.S. Navy enlisted sailor flat hats featuring matching woven silk cap tallies for the dreadnought battleship USS North Dakota (Battleship No. 29).
Commissioned in 1910, the USS North Dakota served through the First World War before being decommissioned in 1923. Ship-named tallies like these were completely banned and discontinued by the Navy in 1941 for operational security, making these original early 20th-century dreadnought ribbons highly sought after by militaria collectors.Both hats came together and represent an incredible snapshot of a single sailor's issued uniform gear. Sailer Pace. Both are identified inside as belonging to Sailer Pace. Which is my Great Great Aunt’s brother. They have been handed down through our family.

Cap Tallies (Ribbons): Both USS North Dakota woven silk tallies are intact, legible, and firmly attached to the hats. The lettering remains bright and well-defined.
Wool Cap Bodies: Both hats are in heavily distressed, poor textile condition. They exhibit extensive moth tracking, grazing, structural holes, lint degradation, and missing wool nap as pictured.Interior: Shows expected aging, dust, and wear from a century of storage. No structural restorations have been attempted.
