The Color Rush was a violent and dangerous campus tradition at the University of Illinois held from 1891 to 1908, featuring fierce competitions between freshmen and sophomores. The event involved greased poles bearing the respective class colors planted about 60 feet apart, where students guarded their own poles while opposing groups attempted to tear down the enemy colors. Due to frequent injuries and suspensions, the tradition was retired and replaced by less hazardous contests like the Push Ball and later the Sack Rush.
