Original and very rare carte de visite photograph showing Alphonse de Bourbon-Siciles (1841-1934), Crown Prince of the Two Sicilies, dressed in his pontifical zouave uniform during his time serving in defense of the Papal States while in exile in Rome.
On the back in period ink is a his name (possibly his signature?) and a note in French:
Souvenir de don Alphonse de Bourbon a l'accasion de los depart pour l'Autriche le 19 Decembre 1869 Il a une permission de 3 mois
Loosely translated as a keepsake from Don Alfonso, taken on December 19, 1869, before heading to Austria on a three month leave.
This CDV, taken by Faffaello Ferretti in Rome, measures approximately 4" x 2.5" and is in very good to excellent antique condition. It's very rare; I was unable to find another example of the Prince in his pontifical zouave uniform, and this one is signed and dated, with a personal note.
