Up for sale is thisvintage Gimbaled Captain’s Maritime Desk Clock. It is encasedin an octagonal mahogany presentationboxwith a rosewood-finish.This piece was produced in the 1990s by Benchmark Clock Co., a well-known maker of executive desktop timepieces. The company was based in Windsor, CT, but their mechanicaland precision quartz clock movements were manufactured in Germany.Thisclock features a push-button clasp, Arabic numerals with secondary 24-hour military time markers, a Japanese quartz battery movement, and an alarm setting.
The timepiece's design wasinspired by traditional 19th-century marine chronometers, entailing the brass clock suspended on side swivels (gimbals) inside the case. This allows it to remain level even when the box is tilted or moved—a feature originally designed to keep ship clocks steady on rough seas.A brass plaque was set inside the upper lid that was custom-engraved for the MPI Foundation (Meeting Professionals International).
