VTG 1940s Magic Circle Washboard Hand-E Mfg Minneapolis Primitive Farmhouse For Sale

Wonderful and unusual VTG circa 1940s Magic Circle washboard by Hand-E Mfg. Co. of Minneapolis, Minnesota. This is far more visually interesting than the typical ribbed washboard, featuring the distinctive double concentric-circle washing surfaces that gave the Magic Circle its name.

The original embossed advertising and identification remain visible, including “MAGIC CIRCLE,” “HAND-E MFG. CO. MINNEAPOLIS 12, MINN.,” “HAND-E WASH BOARD,” “PAT. APPLIED FOR,” and the terrific period advertising slogan “SAVE HANDS – SAVE CLOTHES – THE CIRCLES DO THE HARD WORK.”

Constructed with an original wooden frame surrounding the metal washing surface, the board combines traditional horizontal washing ribs with two large raised circular scrubbing patterns. It is a fantastic surviving piece of American laundry and household history, but today its greatest appeal may be decorative. The unusual circles, old advertising and naturally aged surfaces make it particularly striking for a farmhouse laundry room, primitive kitchen, country store display, Northwoods cabin, cottage, mudroom or vintage advertising collection.

I have intentionally elected to leave this washboard in its authentic, as-found vintage state rather than clean, polish, restore or refinish it. The aged wood, oxidation, discoloration, scratches, surface wear and naturally developed patina have been preserved as part of its history and character. Nothing has been done to artificially improve or disguise its age.

This is an approximately 80-year-old utilitarian household piece, so buyers should expect genuine evidence of age and previous use. Photos are an important part of the condition reporting and should be reviewed closely.

An especially fun example for the collector who already has the traditional washboards and wants something different—or simply a fabulous piece of authentic old Americana with tremendous decorative character.
