VTG 1947 Vaad Hatzala Munich Germany Hebrew Bible Chumash Truman Post-Holocaust: $369.99
This postwar Vaad Hatzala survivor’s Bible shows honest age and use; the binding is solid with pages intact, but there is noticeable rubbing and flaking to the spine and corners, and the original slipcase has heavy edge wear, splits and losses at several corners – still protects the book but should be handled gently. 1947 Munich, Germany printing by Vaad Hatzala for Holocaust survivors and DP camp communities, using former Nazi presses now rededicated to Jewish sacred texts. Hebrew “Chamishah Chumshei Torah” (Five Books of Moses) with Rashi and Targum Onkelos commentaries, plus Haftarot and Megillot, in classic two-column rabbinic layout. Striking colored lithographic title page and introductory leaves, including English and Hebrew messages of gratitude to the American people and to President Harry S. Truman, with printed U.S. flag illustration. Brown textured leatherette boards with gilt Ten Commandments tablet motif and border design; front cover lettered “THE HOLY BIBLE” in English and Hebrew, with “VAAD HATZALA – GERMANY” at bottom. Personalized presentation copy, front board gilt-stamped “Mr. Samuel Kalish,” typical of donor and survivor presentation issues from this edition. Spine lettered “BIBLE” in English, Hebrew word for Chumash, and “VAAD HATZALA,” now with rub-through, flaking, and surface cracking from age. Original grey patterned cardboard slipcase present, heavily worn with crushed and split corners and paper loss, but historically important and not often found intact. Interior pages generally clean and legible for age, with expected toning and scattered small spots; no obvious large tears or missing sections seen in the provided pages. Approximate measurements in slipcase: 7 1/2 in tall, 6 in wide, 1 3/4 in thick. Important piece of post-Holocaust Judaica and DP camp history, suitable for a serious Judaica, Bible, or WWII-era collection.
