A wonderful vintage hand-carved soapstone sculpture depicting a seated mother carrying a child in the traditional amauti style carrier on her back.
This substantial carving is cut from dark gray to black stone with natural mineral inclusions visible throughout. The figure features incised hair details, carved facial features, and a beautifully stylized representation of mother and child. The piece has a wonderful tactile quality and displays beautifully from all angles.
Acquired from the estate of a longtime antique collector and world traveler. While unsigned, the carving is consistent with mid-to-late 20th century Inuit-style mother and child soapstone sculptures that became popular through Arctic art galleries and collectors.
The stone is cold to the touch and heavy for its size, weighing approximately 2 pounds.
