Vintage (1970’s through 1990’s) Oaxaca Alebrije “Deer” (giraffe) Hand carved and painted Folk Art figurine by Francisco Melchor. Signed by the Artist.
Masterfully carved Alebrije art piece crafted entirely out of copal wood then hand painted in the traditional pointillism style by Francisco Melchor, of the famous Mexican Artisan Melchor family.
The Melchor family is considered one of the pioneers of the Alebrije Folk Art style since the 1970’s when other folk artists brought the craft to San Martin Tilcajete, a small Mexican village at that time.
A family of generational artisans, the Melchor’s traditional Alebrije Folk Art was featured at the Smithsonian in the early 1990’s. The family continues to train the younger generations in the original style from their studio which is still located in San Martin Tilcajete in Mexico.
The Melchor family’s handcrafted Mexican Folk art is regularly featured in fine art publications and Art Galleries worldwide. The figurines are considered an excellent example of traditional Alebrije and Oaxacan folk art from that region.
This giraffe (sometimes referred to as a “Deer” in this folk art genre) is carefully hand decorated in acrylic paint with the traditional design and pointillism of the San Martin Tilcajete region. It’s long tail is crafted from authentic horse hair.
This piece is an exquisite example of Oaxacan artisans\' expertise in carving animals (tonas). The hand painted giraffe pattern is outlined in a bright magenta with yellow pointillism over a painted black background. His teal hooves and horns add an unexpected contrast. A beautiful piece to add to any collection.
This is a Vintage ONE OF A KIND ART PIECE. Because these figurines are hand carved and painted individually, no two pieces are ever alike.

Some minor scuffs to the paint on the hooves, head and ear. Small crack on the top of one of the giraffe’s front legs. (Shown in photos) It does not appear that the leg was broken then reattached, but rather it could be from the wood drying out over time due to its age. Please thoroughly inspect all of the photos, as they are part of the description.
