This charming antique postcard features a romantic moonlit nighttime scene of a Venice, Italy canal. The sepia-toned lithographic illustration captures gondolas gliding along a quiet canal flanked by historic Venetian architecture, including a Gothic-style church facade on the right and a tall-spired building on the left. A full moon breaks through dramatic clouds, casting silvery reflections on the still water below. A gondolier poles his craft with a passenger seated inside, evoking the timeless atmosphere of La Serenissima. The card was published by Gartner & Bender of Chicago, a well-known early 20th-century postcard publisher. It features a divided back consistent with the Divided Back era (1907–1915), and bears a 1-cent green U.S. postage stamp featuring the Panama-Pacific Exposition issue (1915), postmarked from Holton, Kansas. The card was addressed to Mr. Howard Hersh of Frankfort, Kansas. Condition is rated Good. There is general toning and light soiling commensurate with age, a small corner chip at the lower left, and the reverse features a full handwritten message in flowing cursive. The front illustration is clear and displays beautifully despite its age of over 100 years. This is a lovely example of an Edwardian-era romantic Venice scene postcard, ideal for collectors of Italian topographicals, moonlight artist views, or early American-published European cards. A wonderful piece of postal history from the golden age of postcards.
