An antique photo dated as 1881 on the verso with the description “First Garden in Sitka. Rev. Mr. A. E. Austin on extreme left – about the center holding. 1881.”
Any early photos of Rev. Austin are quite rare, and especially this one showing Sitka’s first garden. This albumen print, mounted on cardstock, is sized at 3-3/16 x 5 inches (image 3-1/8 x 4-1/2 inches).
As the description of the photo verso reads, “First Garden in Sitka. Rev. Mr. A. E. Austin on extreme left – about the center holding. 1881.” This is a rare and important early photo of Sitka, Alaska.
The Rev. Alonzo E. Austin (1837-1915) death notice states he wasordained as a minister, serving under the board of home missions of the Presbyterian Church. In 1879 he went to Sitka, Alaska, where he remained as a missionary of the Presbyterian Church until 1898, when he returned to the United States. While in Alaska, Mr. Austin founded the Alaskan Indian Industrial School at Sitka, the territorial capital, which became one of the largest institutions in Alaska.
