The precise Wreck Provenance is a mystery since it has been passed along without fanfare. The original owner told the most recent owner that the flag was \"recovered from a British ship that had sunk in one of the Great Lakes separating Canada from the US.\"
In 2016, the Royal Museums Greenwich Curator (RMG) of Historic Photographs and Ships Plans stated he considered the flag to be from the late 1800s and the RMG\'s Senior Textile Conservator placed the origination between the very late 1800s to early 1900s (a copy of email will be provided to buyer).
This is a tremendous 1870s-1890s era Union Jack flag in fair but heavily worn condition. The header is unmarked. The flag has heavy tearing across the bottom portion with some spots of heavy material loss. It measures roughly ~80\" wide x 42\" tall and could use some restoration or preservation.
The flag does show extensive wear and has scattered wear holes and tearing as shown. These could be from moths, but they look much more like the flag material aging and becoming somewhat delicate.
A historic Union Jack from the Second Anglo-Afghan War era (1878–1880).

HMS Ontario (sunk 31 October 1780) — A British 22-gun brig-sloop sank in a storm on Lake Ontario, discovered in 2008. The oldest shipwreck ever found on the Great Lakes.

The national flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag. The earlier flag of Great Britain was established in 1606 by a proclamation of King James VI and I of Scotland and England. The new flag of the United Kingdom was officially created by an Order in Council of 1801, with its blazon reading as follows:
The Union Flag shall be azure, the Crosses saltire of Saint Andrew and Saint Patrick quarterly per saltire, counter-changed, argent and gules, the latter fimbriated of the second, surmounted by the Cross of Saint George of the third fimbriated as the saltire.
No official standardized colors were specified, although the Flag Institute defines the red and royal blue colors as Pantone 186 C and Pantone 280 C, respectively.
