Vintage 1950s Folding Lipstick Mirror Purple Stone Gold Tone Vanity Compact For Sale

Wonderful vintage vanity accessory combining a folding oval mirror with a lipstick holder built directly into the handle.

The oval mirror is framed in ornate gold-tone metal and backed with a striking raised mosaic of translucent purple stones or glass chips in varying shades of lavender, violet and plum. The irregular pieces give the decoration a jewel-like, dimensional appearance.

The cylindrical gold-tone handle doubles as a lipstick case. The outer sleeve removes to reveal the original lipstick mechanism inside, and a small amount of vintage red lipstick remains. The mirror is hinged so that it can fold down alongside the lipstick tube for compact storage in a handbag or vanity case.

This style is strongly associated with the ingenious folding lipstick mirrors produced during the 1950s, including Schildkraut’s well-known Lip-Vue design. Period Schildkraut examples used essentially this same folding mirror and concealed-lipstick configuration.

The mirror is intact without obvious cracks or large chips. The decorative purple chip surface is attractive and appears largely intact. The gold-tone metal shows surface scratches, rubbing, discoloration and other normal signs of age and use.

The lipstick tube contains old lipstick residue. This is being sold strictly as a vintage collectible/vanity item, and the remaining cosmetic is not intended for use.
