This is the cathode-ray-tube display and control unit used with the SCR-718-D/E/F high-altitude pulse radar-altimeter system and subsequently with the AN/APN-133 electronic altimeter. The system measured absolute altitude above terrain or water using ×1 and ×10 scales. Applications included early C-130/WC-130 aircraft and other Cold War weather, reconnaissance and heavy-aircraft installations.
A faded San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Kelly AFB, Texas quality-inspection decal remains on top, indicating Air Force depot servicing or inspection.
This particular unit’s originating aircraft is unknown; no aircraft removal tag or records are included. It dates from the Cold War rather than WWII, although the SCR-718 design originated during WWII. Unit measuresapproximately 6½ × 6⁹⁄₁₆ × 12½ inches
