Maker Biography: Tadeusz Jodłowski (1925–2015)

Tadeusz Jodłowski was a towering figure in the legendary Polish School of Posters. Born in Piekary Śląskie, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, later working closely alongside master designer Henryk Tomaszewski. Jodłowski served as the artistic director for WAG (Graphic Arts Publishers) and held prestigious academic roles, including professor at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Known for his mastery of contrast, bold structural composition, and playful integration of text and image, his works have been exhibited globally, earning him numerous international awards.

Historical Information & Interesting Facts

The "CYRK" Phenomenon: Beginning in 1962, the Polish state entertainment agency (ZPR) broke away from traditional commercial advertising. Instead of depicting literal or mundane acts, they commissioned elite fine artists to design metaphorical, witty, and painterly posters announcing the arrival of the circus.

Mid-1960s Golden Era: Posters from 1965 represent the early, highly coveted developmental years of the Cyrk series, where the movement gained international critical acclaim for its avant-garde edge.

Cultural Sanctuary: Because the state gave artists total creative freedom on Cyrk posters as a form of non-political cultural output, these pieces became a secret outlet for surrealism and brilliant graphic experimentation behind the Iron Curtain.
