Vintage group of 5 Hubert Humphrey / Edmund Muskie political campaign buttons associated with the 1968 presidential campaign.
This lot includes several variations of the classic red, white and blue HUMPHREY MUSKIE design, including:
• 3 red/white/blue Humphrey Muskie buttons with star designs
• 1 white/blue/red Humphrey Muskie variation with three stars
• 1 Humphrey Muskie button featuring photographic portraits of Humphrey and Muskie
The four text-design buttons are consistent with 1968 Humphrey-Muskie campaign memorabilia. Archival collections at the University of South Carolina, Smithsonian Institution, Cornell University and other institutions document Humphrey-Muskie buttons from the 1968 campaign.
Note: The portrait button appears to be a later 1972 reproduction of a 1968 Humphrey-Muskie design, rather than an original 1968 campaign button. The Smithsonian documents this particular style as a 1972 reproduction.
The buttons are presented on their original/older display cards with staples and plastic coverings. Cards show age, discoloration, wear and handwritten inventory markings. Buttons themselves show varying degrees of surface wear, scratches and age-related discoloration.
