Fresh off the excitement of the postwar boom and the brand-new highway system, they pointed their car west, chasing the promise of California sunshine and the open road. When they finally rolled into San Francisco, the city by the Golden Gate, they likely stopped at the Holiday Lodge to rest — picking up this very map before setting off to explore cable cars, Chinatown, and the sparkling Bay. Maybe it rode with them across the bridge, wind in their hair, the scent of salt and adventure in the air.

And somehow, against all odds, it made the journey back home. It spent decades tucked away here in the Midwest — folded, quiet, waiting — while the world changed around it. Now, seventy years later, it’s ready for another chapter.
