PILLSBURY (1870–1946)Arthur Clarence Pillsbury was a visionary whose innovations fundamentally extended human vision at a critical turning point in Western American history. Born to a family of physicians, Pillsbury approached photography through the rigorous lens of a scientist and a mechanical engineer, a trade he mastered while studying at Stanford University in the 1890s.Pillsbury was a prolific inventor who custom-built 21 revolutionary camera systems throughout his life—including the groundbreaking Circuit Panorama Camera (his Stanford senior thesis). He survived a perilous shipwreck to document the brutal terrain of the Klondike Gold Rush, served as a photojournalist for the San Francisco Examiner, and famously photographed the burning ruins of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.Settling in Yosemite Valley, he operated the legendary Studio of the Three Arrows from 1897 to 1927. Known affectionately as the "Wildflower Man," Pillsbury invented the world's first time-lapse motion picture camera specifically to document the growth of Sierra flora, using his films to successfully campaign for wildflower conservation and protect the valley from commercial mowing. He went on to pioneer microscopic, X-ray, and underwater cinematography.
