This is an authentic Dogon granary door panel from Mali, West Africa, professionally mounted and displayed in a custom shadow box frame. The Dogon people of Mali are among the most celebrated cultures in African tribal art, renowned for the sophistication and spiritual symbolism of their carved wood objects — and their granary doors are among the most recognized and collected examples of African decorative art in the world.
Granary doors like this one were used to secure the storage houses that held grain — the most precious resource of the community. The carved imagery is deeply symbolic, depicting rows of abstracted human figures, ancestral forms, geometric patterns and ceremonial motifs that encode the Dogon cosmological worldview. Each panel is hand carved and unique. The dark, dense wood has developed a rich patina consistent with age and handling.
This example is in good overall condition with some cracking and splitting to the wood consistent with age and dryness — completely normal and expected for pieces of this type and origin. It is presented in a black shadow box frame with a natural linen backing, approximately 23” wide x 18” tall overall, making it a substantial and ready-to-hang wall piece.
Dogon doors appear regularly at major sale houses and tribal art galleries, with comparable examples selling from several hundred dollars well into the thousands depending on age, provenance, and quality of carving. This is a strong example with excellent display presentation.
