J. Hoare came to Corning, New York in 1868 after learning his trade in England. He was a master cutter and won many awards for his glass and created pieces for the White House in 1873. The company was one of the largest cut glass companies in the country. He expanded his shop to Wellsboro, PA from 1906 to 1914.Upon his death, his sons, James and John, continued the business until 1920 with the decline of the cut glass industry.
Manganese was used to remove the green tint, and in larger quantities to color the glass green. Glass that contains manganese is pre-World War II. After, selenium was used as a glass clarifier. You can find clear glass that glows green as well as tinted green glass that glows as well.
This bowl set contains the traditional design (Monarch) indicative of J. Hoare. It is American Brilliant Cut Glass and glows with a UV light.
