Striking vintage Chinese Hongshan-style carved stone figurine, personally purchased at the Dirt Market in Beijing, China, in 1990.
This unusually large and heavy sculpture features an abstract anthropomorphic figure with a stylized face, rounded torso, folded arms and geometric lower form. The carving has a dark olive/green coloration with contrasting tan, cream and brown areas that give it a wonderfully aged appearance.
The exact stone has not been professionally tested. It may be serpentine or another dense Chinese carving stone and is therefore being sold as carved stone, not as nephrite jade.
The design appears influenced by archaic/Hongshan-style Chinese forms.
No claim is being made that this is an ancient Hongshan artifact.
It is being offered as a vintage decorative Chinese carving acquired in Beijing in 1990.
A particularly impressive piece due to its 12” height and substantial 8.5 pound weight.
