Very large andbeautifully made Chinese polychrome porcelain “Laughing Buddha” statue, styledin the colorful famille rose palette. Itdepicts Budai (the Zen monk revered as a symbol of happiness, abundance andgood fortune) seated with oneknee raised, a large exposed belly and a joyful, smiling expression. This piece is expertly hand-painted – hisrobes feature a colorful, highly detailed pattern composed of vibrant pink,yellow, and turquoise floral motifs alongside traditional Chinese decorativebands. He is holding a string of gildedBuddhist prayer beads in his left hand while resting his right hand over hisclassic cloth sack of riches.
