Vintage Columbia Wingamatic Pen Pencil Set Koehring Advertising Case Instruction For Sale

Offered here is a vintage matched Wingamatic ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil advertising Koehring, presented in its plastic storage/display case and accompanied by the original Wingamatic operating instruction sheet.

Wingamatic writing instruments were produced by Columbia Pen and Pencil Co., Inc. Columbia owned the Wingamatic trademark for ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils. Trademark records indicate Wingamatic was in commercial use by 1958, with Columbia filing for the trademark in 1961. This set is believed to date from approximately the early-to-mid 1960s.

Both instruments have bright orange barrels with chrome-tone upper sections and blue KOEHRING advertising logos.

The Wingamatic uses an unusual patented clip-operated retracting mechanism. The original instruction sheet calls it “The Pen That Remembers” and explains that the forward portion of the clip is pushed to extend the writing point, while the top end of the clip is pushed to retract it.

The instruction sheet identifies U.S. Patent No. 2,881,738 and lists several advantages of the Wingamatic design.

Pen: The retracting mechanism operates. The pen currently produces blue ink, although ink flow is intermittent/skippy, as would be expected from an older refill. Continued performance of the vintage refill is not guaranteed.

Mechanical Pencil: The mechanism operates (the top and bottom twist/turn), but the pencil appears to be out of lead. It has not been writing-tested with replacement lead.
