Large vintage Egyptian-style hand-appliquéd textile wall hanging, measuring approximately 64 inches long × 32 inches wide.
This striking piece is made in the traditional khayamiya / Egyptian tentmaker appliqué style, with individually cut and stitched fabric elements arranged into an elaborate ancient-Egyptian scene.
The central figure appears as a pharaonic or royal figure holding a large ankh, surrounded by attendants, birds, geometric motifs, striped borders, and architectural/pyramid-inspired forms. The muted tan, cream, black, gray, and red palette gives the textile a strong aged decorative appearance.
Construction appears to be largely hand worked. The reverse shows extensive hand stitching associated with the appliqué work and provides a good view of how the textile was assembled.
Condition:
Vintage used condition with considerable age-related wear. There are areas of staining/discoloration, fraying, fabric losses, worn appliqué, loose or exposed stitching, and older damaged/repaired areas. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description. The wear gives the textile considerable character but should be expected throughout.
No maker, signature, or precise date has been identified.
This would make an impressive large-scale wall display for a collector of Egyptian revival décor, Middle Eastern textiles, folk art, handmade appliqué, ethnographic decorative arts, or unusual vintage interiors.
