BUCK’S STATEMENT:
There was a time when nearly every sunny window had something growing in it. A fern on the porch, an African violet beside the kitchen sink, or a sprawling houseplant sitting proudly on the living-room stand. And holding those plants were pieces like this — heavy old pottery made in rich colors and interesting shapes, substantial enough to become part of the room itself. This vintage planter has a wonderful deeply fluted body covered in a dark green glaze that lightens toward the rim into mottled shades of moss, jade and sea green. The glaze settles differently across every ridge, giving the piece the wonderfully imperfect character that makes old pottery so appealing.
Today, you don’t necessarily need a plant to appreciate it. Set it among old books and collected objects, fill it with a trailing pothos, or let that sculptural ribbed form stand on its own. It has the earthy, architectural quality that works beautifully alongside mid-century, Arts & Crafts, studio pottery and natural interiors without feeling tied to any one style. The underside carries an indistinct impressed mark, but we have not identified the maker and are offering this piece as unbranded vintage pottery rather than making an uncertain attribution.
