Specifics:

Authentic—not a reproduction—this over 100-year-old document is a American Rubber & Tire Companyletter and is dated September 2, 1921 (at this time, the Anglo-Irish Treaty ended British rule in most of Ireland, Warren G. Harding was in his first term as U.S. President, and Adolf Hitler began his rise to prominence as leader of Germany's Nazi Party). It measures approximately 8 x 11 inches and features especially striking lithography. In good condition, with natural tan patina from age, enhancing its charm, it does have general wear as well as some soiling and creasing (it has been folded for mailing).

Of note, this letter highlights surging demand for rubber bathing slippers amid booming consumer markets. This growth coincided with the automobile’s growing popularity; by the early 1920s, millions of cars were registered in the U.S., making automobiles a significant part of American life. Akron, Ohio, as the "Rubber Capital," supplied tires and diversified rubber goods to meet this demand. The rise in auto ownership spurred a massive increase in rubber production, reflecting broader economic expansion and mass-market innovation characteristic of the 1920s.

About the company:

The American Rubber & Tire Company of Akron, Ohio, was founded in 1898 by Frank A. Seiberling. Initially producing bicycle and carriage tires along with other rubber goods, the company grew rapidly alongside the booming automobile industry. Akron became known as the "Rubber Capital of the World" due to its strategic location, labor force, and access to transportation. The company expanded to manufacture automobile tires and other rubber products, benefiting from innovations like vulcanization. Due to changing tire technology, competition from imports, and companies relocating production to more modern plants in the southern U.S. Many historic Akron rubber companies closed or moved operations during the 1970's and 1980's, and American Rubber & Tire was among those that closed their doors forever during these years.
