OTELLIE JACKSON, matriarch of the famous Hopi Jackson Family of Kachina Carvers, signed her name under the Base of this large OGRE KACHINA that she hand carved from Cottonwood Root, then painted, assembled, decorated and secured to a rectangular Base. Standing 11½\" tall and 7½\" wide (elbow to elbow), this scary Ogre Kachina was one of her specialties. The Ogre was draped and dressed in leather, lace, hair and felt, and armed with a Bow.
This Kachina was purchased directly from Otellie Jackson at her home in the Pueblo of Sichomovi, the middle Pueblo Village atop First Mesa on the Hopi Reservation in Northeast Arizona, in the 1970\'s. Family members living in that household have since become recognized as accomplished Kachina (Katsina) Carvers, following in Otellie\'s footsteps....including Roger Jackson, Esther Jackson, Skip Jackson, etc.
This Ogre Kachina Doll represents the Ogre Kachina who makes his appearance in Hopi Villages during the annual Bean Dance Ceremony. Designed to frighten children into good behaviour, they serve as disciplinarians. With their scary appearance, typically with bulging eyes, long tongue, vicious teeth, ratty hair, and usually armed with weapons they command attentioin and respect.
