What is Dosojin?Dosojin (道祖神) is the ancient Shinto deity who stands at village borders, crossroads, and mountain passes to protect travelers and ward off evil spirits, disease, and misfortune. This mask is his face - surprised, shouting, alive with protective energy.
About This Piece:This is NOT a mass-produced tourist item. It is a vintage Mingei (folk craft) Hariko mask made of layered papier-mâché, hand-painted to look like weathered stone.Inside, it retains its original Japanese paper label describing it as a work from a humble, eccentric artist - \"a rare, primitive and wonderfully free folk soul that is hard to find.\"
The texture is incredible - cracked, earthy, with traces of red and black pigment that have faded beautifully over decades. True Wabi-Sabi aesthetic.
