The Japanese wood mosaic is called Yosegi-zaiku, a marquetry technique developed in the Hakone region of Japan over 150 years ago. Thin pieces of naturally colored wood, walnut, cherry, maple, dogwood, etc. are assembled into intricate geometric patterns without paint
This traditional Japanese puzzle box measures approximately 6” x 4” x 2 1/2” and requires a 10 step sequence of sliding panels to reveal the hidden compartment in the secret puzzle box. These ingenious boxes have been handcrafted in Japan’s Hakone region for generations and are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship and mechanical design.
An especially desirable feature is that this example still includes the original Japanese construction sheet attached to the underside showing the opening sequence.
