Up for sale is a stunning, beautifully preserved matching pair of vintage mid-century Japanese silk embroidery landscape artworks. These pieces feature classic, highly detailed textile scenes depicting a multi-tiered pagoda temple, a traditional lakeside shrine complex with a red bridge, serene pine trees, and a faint silhouette of Mount Fuji rising through the mist in the background.
The craftsmanship is excellent, utilizing fine silk threads that catch the light with a subtle, shimmering 3D visual texture.
Fascinating Provenance & History:
These pieces have a wonderful, backstory. They were originally purchased by a U.S. serviceman stationed overseas during the Vietnam War era (circa late 1960s / early 1970s) and brought back home to the states.. (His wife was having a sale and she told me where they come from. He was no longer living.)
Upon returning, in Pennsylvania, had them professionally framed at the high-end Picture Department of the historic Joseph Horne Company department store in Pittsburgh, PA. The back of the frames feature the original glued brown paper dust covers, heavy-duty eyelets with hanging wires, and the original vintage store sticker reading: "Picture Department, Joseph Horne Company, artistic framing, 2113."
One of the pictures in the set, features an authentic red artist seal (hankō) stamp in the lower-left corner.
Who has translated this as reading “Jade Waters”or “Jeweled Waters”.
Condition:
Both pieces are in good vintage condition. The silk embroideries are crisp and vibrant. There is some waviness in the embroidery, but they lay pretty flat. They are vintage, and they do show little signs of age some slight yellowing. The black-and-gold wood frames are solid and sturdy with minor, age-appropriate surface wear. The glass is clean, & undamaged, and the paper backings remain fully intact and well-sealed. They are ready to hang immediately upon arrival. They present very well -they are pretty.
