Presented is a beautiful Japanese woodblock print created in 1959 by the renowned artist Kiwamura Sojiro (1900-1973), a key figure in the Sosaku-hanga movement.
Kiwamura Sojiro was born in 1900 in Kyoto. He studied art in Tokyo and became one of the artists who participated in the \"Ichimoku-shu\" folio, a publication that introduced the Sosaku-hanga movement to the Japanese general public and to the Western world.
Sosaku-hanga is a twentieth-century Japanese art movement that advocated for prints to be designed, carved, and printed by a single artist. This was in opposition to the traditional method of Japanese printmaking, which divided the labor among different craftspeople. For most of their history, Japanese prints were understood as commercial products. But in the early twentieth century, influenced in part by European attitudes toward the role of the artist and visual expression, a new generation of artists argued that prints could express the individuality and creativity of the artist and should be considered an art form.
The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique in the 1959s as a part of the series \"Eight Sceneries of Omi\". It references the famous Hokusai series with the same name and is a tribute to Hokusai from Sojiro. The series with the same name was actually made by Hiroshige as well, and several others, so it became a tradition in ukiyo-e print making. The print depicts a section of road in Awazu on the Tokaido Road, bordered by pine trees.

The print is created in black and white, with the white background actually made with silverish mica powder, creating a wonderful effect. It is mounted in a black mat.

The condition is very good. Great detail and colors, very minor age-related toning. There are some tears to the left margin fixed with patches of museum linen tape. They don\'t affect the sight.
