Presented is a beautiful Japanese woodblock print created in 1959 by the renowned artist Kiwamura Sojiro (1900-1973), a key figure in the Sosaku-hanga movement.
Kiwamura Sojiro was born in 1900 in Kyoto. He studied art in Tokyo and became one of the artists who participated in the \"Ichimoku-shu\" folio, a publication that introduced the Sosaku-hanga movement to the Japanese general public and to the Western world.
Sosaku-hanga is a twentieth-century Japanese art movement that advocated for prints to be designed, carved, and printed by a single artist. This was in opposition to the traditional method of Japanese printmaking, which divided the labor among different craftspeople. For most of their history, Japanese prints were understood as commercial products. But in the early twentieth century, influenced in part by European attitudes toward the artist\'s role and visual expression, a new generation of artists argued that prints could express the artist\'s individuality and creativity and should be considered an art form.
The print was made using the Japanese woodblock technique in the 1959s as a part of the series \"Eight Sceneries of Omi\". It references the famous Hokusai series with the same name and is a tribute to Hokusai from Sojiro.
Actually, Hokusai created two series with the same name. Also, at least 3 series with the same name were made by Hiroshige, as were several others, so it became a tradition in ukiyo-e printmaking.
The print depicts the famous Shin Karasaki pine tree in front of Lake Biwa in the rain. This is a very old, ancient pine tree that is over 1000 years old - it is also depicted on one of Utagawa Hiroshige\'s prints from the 1850s. This pine tree was the subject of the poem by the famous Japanese poet Basho in 1684. I have provided a scan of a postcard from 1910 with the image of this pine tree.
The Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo has 143 works by Kiwamura. Please see a record of this particular print in the Museum inventory.
The print is created in black and white, with the white background actually made with silverish mica powder, creating a wonderful effect. It is mounted in a black mat.
