This impressive opposing pair of guardian lion bookends—often referred to as "Foo Dogs"—is attributed to Jaru of California, a well-known Mid-Century decorative arts studio recognized for its sculptural home décor during the 1960s and 1970s. While the original maker's markings are no longer present, the sculptural form, dimensions, weight, and construction closely correspond to documented Jaru examples. Each bookend is cast in substantial plaster and finished in an original hand-applied polychrome palette of warm cream, salmon, ochre, and antiqued brown tones. Decades of honest wear have softened the finish, creating a beautifully aged surface that highlights the richly molded detail. Rather than diminishing their appeal, this time-earned character gives the pair the appearance of architectural fragments or weathered temple guardians. The opposing lions feature finely sculpted flowing manes, stylized scrollwork, looped tails, and ornate two-tier bases, making them equally striking as functional bookends or as standalone decorative sculptures. Each bookend measures approximately 8 inches long, 6 inches tall, and 6 inches wide, and weighs approximately 2 pounds 12 ounces, for a combined weight of approximately 5½ pounds. These bookends remain in very good vintage condition with expected age-related wear. The original painted finish exhibits areas of rubbing, flaking, and surface loss consistent with decades of display, contributing to the authentic, timeworn appearance that makes vintage decorative plaster so appealing.
