Vintage Chichicastenango Guatemala Maya Huipil Tunic Handwoven Backstrap Loom Sun Ray Embroidery
This authentic vintage Maya huipil from Chichicastenango, Guatemala, is a remarkable example of traditional K'iche' Maya textile artistry. Handmade from hand-spun cotton and woven on a traditional backstrap loom, this ceremonial and everyday garment reflects generations of Indigenous weaving traditions that have been passed down through the centuries.
The huipil features the distinctive embroidered sun ray motif surrounding the neckline, an identifying characteristic of vintage Chichicastenango textiles. Below the collar, vibrant geometric designs are meticulously hand-brocaded directly into the foundation fabric, demonstrating the exceptional skill and craftsmanship of the weaver. Throughout the garment, hand-bound embroidery reinforces and stabilizes the handwoven cloth, while the central seam is joined with a traditional randa, an important decorative and structural element found in Maya textiles.
Based on its construction, materials, and weaving techniques, this huipil was most likely created in the early 1960s. It represents an outstanding piece of Guatemalan cultural heritage and would make a wonderful addition to a textile collection, museum display, or collection of Indigenous Latin American art.

Condition
This is an authentic vintage textile that shows significant age and use. As shown in the photographs, the lower edge exhibits noticeable fraying, fiber loss, small tears, and scorch marks near the bottom center. These condition issues are consistent with a textile that was used for many years and may benefit from professional conservation or restoration. Despite the wear, the colors, weaving, and intricate handwork remain impressive and continue to showcase the artistry of its maker. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
