Description

This is a large vintage Sosaku Kokeshi titled “Mushin” (No Mind) by renowned master Masao Watanabe (1917–2007).
Watanabe is known as a pioneer of modern creative Kokeshi and received numerous prestigious awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award.

The piece features a distinctive chestnut-shaped head and a refined minimalist appearance.
It has the quiet and understated atmosphere characteristic of Watanabe’s work.

Standing approximately 45 cm (17.7 inches) tall and weighing about 3430 g (7.56 lbs), this is an exceptionally large and heavy example compared to typical Kokeshi dolls.
Its impressive size gives it a strong decorative presence.

The body surface showcases Watanabe’s distinctive craftsmanship.
It features a finely textured finish with subtle unevenness that creates a soft appearance.
The decorative patterns are slightly raised and can be gently felt by touch.

Based on its structure and substantial weight, the materials are believed to be Mizuki wood for the head and dense Keyaki (Zelkova) wood for the body.

The base is signed by the artist and marked with the title “Mushin” along with a red seal.
