The front portraysWilliam Pennin his broad-brimmed Quaker hat and long colonial coat. On the reverse, the molded design reveals the subject more fully: Penn holds a treaty scroll behind his back, with“WM-PENN”and“TREATY”worked directly into the porcelain. The sweeping handle incorporates a stylized Lenape figure, making the reverse as visually important as the front.

The imagery refers to the traditional account of Penn’s meeting with Lenape leaders at Shackamaxon, near present-day Philadelphia. Remembered as Penn’s Treaty or the Great Treaty, the meeting became an enduring American symbol of diplomacy and peaceful coexistence and was later memorialized in paintings, prints and decorative art. Historical sources date the traditional meeting to 1682 or 1683 while recognizing that the familiar story developed partly through later cultural memory.

Lenox adapted that narrative to the classicToby-jug format, where the human figure becomes the vessel:
