Original vintage Magic Mufflers & Shocks “Friendly Purple Shops” advertising matchbook display containing 50 matchbooks. Great Southern California automotive advertising piece with colorful purple, red, black and cream graphics. The display advertises mufflers, shocks, smog devices, wheel alignment, overload springs and trailer hitches. Great opportunity to own a piece of San Fernando Valley history!AGE: Circa late 1960s–early 1970s Magic Mufflers & Shocks advertising matchbook display, likely c. 1968–1970. The biggest dating clue is “SMOG DEVICES.” California’s motor-vehicle emissions requirements became a major consumer issue in the second half of the 1960s, so muffler shops began promoting emissions-related equipment and service around that period. The overall artwork also fits that transition. And, finally, the telephone listings also fit the era. The box uses plain seven-digit numbers such as 766-3886 and 340-8188, without area codes, ZIP codes, websites, or later-style service information. That is very consistent with a locally distributed San Fernando Valley promotional piece from the late 1960s/very early 1970s.Locations printed on the box include the following major San Fernando Valley Cities:* North Hollywood
* San Fernando
* Panorama City
* Van Nuys
* Canoga Park
* BurbankDisplay box is marked American Match Company – Los AngelesThe matchbooks feature classic Magic Mufflers advertising design and appear unused (I have not gone through each book and counted matches, but I can confirm there are 50 books of matches in the main box and each booklet appears full). The original countertop display box is included and retains its fold-up advertising headerCONDITION:
