Vintage Miniature Stoneware Jugs on Ribbon Charm Ornament Trio Albany Slip Glaze:
$25.00

Item DescriptionItem Type: Vintage folk art miniature stoneware jug hanging cluster / novelty charm.Composition: Three miniature glazed ceramic stoneware jugs suspended from a woven tan/brown fabric ribbon/cord.Form & Style: Classic single-handled moonshine / whiskey jug form with flared lips and applied loop handles.Glaze & Finish: Rich, glossy dark brown to mottled caramel glaze (reminiscent of Albany slip or Rockingham-style brownware). One jug exhibits incised markings/cross-hatching under the glaze, while others feature smooth or slightly mottled surfaces.Base: Flat, unglazed buff-to-tan stoneware bottoms showing natural clay grain and dark mineral inclusions; unmarked.Mounting: Threaded through the handles and knotted onto a braided/folded grosgrain-style woven fabric ribbon designed for hanging.Several clear features confirm fired stoneware:Unglazed Clay Foot: The flat bottoms show exposed, granular buff/tan ceramic clay body with visible dark mineral grit/grog. There are no growth rings, end grain, or carving marks associated with turned or whittled wood.Liquid Vitrified Glaze: The glossy brown coating is a fired ceramic glaze (Albany-slip or Rockingham style). It exhibits distinct glaze-pooling around crevices, minute pinhole air bubbles, and meniscus edges where the glaze stops near the raw clay base—behavior unique to molten liquid glaze during kiln firing.Handle Construction: The small loop handles are applied clay coils with distinct finger-press attachment points and smoothed seams, characteristic of ceramic mini-jugsThese miniature jugs date to circa 1940s – 1960s (Mid-Century), with a possible early range extending back to the late 1930s.Key dating indicators include:Production Context: Novelty "Little Brown Jug" / moonshine trinkets saw a huge surge in popularity across the American South, Ozarks, and Appalachian roadside tourist trade from the late 1930s through the 1960s, popularized in part by folk songs, souvenir roadside stands, and country fairs.Clay & Glaze Technique: The dark Albany-style slip glaze over a molded coarse stoneware body is classic mid-20th-century novelty pottery production. You often see identical miniature brown-glazed clay jugs tied to ribbons as car rearview mirror charms, lapel pins/fobs, or novelty tourist wall hangers from that era.Ribbon Material: The synthetic/rayon-blend grosgrain-style woven ribbon with crimped, fraying cut ends is typical of 1940s–1960s millinery trim and souvenir assemblage.Individual Miniature JugsHeight: ~1 inch (approx. 2.4 – 2.5 cm)
Diameter / Width: ~0.6 inches (approx. 1.5 cm across the widest part of the belly/base)Hanging AssemblyTotal Hanging Length (Top of ribbon to bottom jug): ~6 to 6.25 inches (approx. 15 – 16 cm)Cluster Drop (Ribbon knot where jugs attach to bottom): ~2.5 inches (approx. 6.5 cm)Detailed Condition AssessmentCeramic / Stoneware Jugs:Integrity: Very Good vintage condition overall. All three jugs retain their original loop handles with no structural breaks or repairs.Glaze Surface: Glossy and intact with light, age-appropriate surface contact wear. Natural factory imperfections are present, including small glaze pops/pinholes, minor glaze pooling around the handles and base rims, and subtle glaze skips typical of handmade or molded miniature stoneware.Rims & Bases: Minor flea bites and roughness along the unglazed bottom foot rims, consistent with shelf display and manufacturing release from the kiln. No large chips or hairline cracks observed.Ribbon / Cord:Integrity: Intact and securely knotted through all three handles.Wear: Shows age-related fraying at the cut top knot ends, general softening, and light creases/soiling from handling and storage. Please review the attached pictures for additional details. Shipping will be combined for multiple items purchased and shipped in the same package.
