The famous 1979 USAir Earth Tone Livery was designed byLandor Associates, the iconic San Francisco-based corporate identity and brandstrategy firm founded by Walter Landor.
Design Background
Origin (1975–1979): The scheme originated in 1975 whenLandor designed a fresh corporate identity for USAir\'s predecessor, AlleghenyAirlines. The layout featured the triple \"earth tone\" stripes (rustorange, bright red, and dark brown) wrapping along the fuselage and fanningacross the tail section.
The 1979 Rebrand: When Allegheny rebranded to USAir onOctober 28, 1979, following airline deregulation, Landor updated the design. They adapted the paint scheme by replacing the white base coat with barepolished aluminum to reduce aircraft weight/drag and updated the titles to thestylized italic USAIR wordmark.
Landor\'s Airline Legacy: Landor Associates was arguablythe premier airline branding agency of the era, also responsible for definingiconic corporate looks for carriers like Alitalia (1967), British Airways (1984\"Landor\" livery), Singapore Airlines, and Northwest Airlines (1989).
- Allegheny Airlines, founded in 1939, evolved its fleet over the years to include DC-9s, Convairs, Boeings, and F27s.
- By 1979, rebranded as USAir, the airline expanded nationwide, eventually merging with Piedmont Airlines and PSA.
- USAir later became US Airways, operating until 2005 before merging with America West, eventually becoming part of American Airlines.
