Unusual original vintage folding STOP sign with a two-piece hinged construction.
This sign has never been installed or mounted. It has been stored for many years and shows age and storage-related wear, but the wear is from storage and handling rather than roadside installation.
The sign consists of two vertically divided halves connected by heavy metal hinges. When opened, the two sections form a traditional octagonal STOP sign. The sign can be folded closed along its centerline when not required.
The face features large raised / embossed STOP lettering, an embossed perimeter border and heavy steel construction.
Folding STOP signs were designed for locations where traffic control was needed only at certain times, such as school entrances, controlled driveways, gates, checkpoints and similar applications. Period documentation confirms hinged/flip STOP signs were used for school-related traffic control by the early 1960s.
Provenance
This sign was acquired on Long Island, New York together with two other older traffic signs from the same source:
- An embossed yellow SCHOOL 15 MPH sign with running-schoolboy graphic, also never mounted
- An embossed dark-green/white DEAD END sign
The exact institution, school or property for which these signs were originally intended has not been verified, so no specific original installation location is being claimed.
Condition
Unused / New Old Stock. Never installed or mounted.
Despite never having been installed, the sign shows substantial age and long-term storage wear, including scratches, scuffs, paint loss, oxidation/rust, discoloration and other handling/storage marks.
The original center hinges and folding mechanism remain intact as pictured.
It has not been repainted or restored.
