Vintage 1960s–1990s NYC Advertising / Graphic / Package Design Archive — 1,000+ Professional Transparencies
Offered here is a substantial original professional design archive from Gaylord Adams / Don Flock & Associates Inc., a New York City graphic, package-design and corporate-branding firm formerly located at 521 Fifth Avenue, Suite 2301, New York, NY.
The collection contains more than 1,000 vintage professional color transparencies and slides, primarily spanning the 1960s through the 1990s, documenting decades of package design, advertising, corporate identity, retail displays, product presentations and other commercial graphic-design work.
This is not an assembled collection of miscellaneous vintage slides. Much of the material remains within its original professional filing system, with typed and handwritten client/project dividers, numbered sequences, professional photographic-laboratory mounts, working duplicates and original firm identification.
Original client/category dividers include IBM CORPORATION, BAUSCH + LOMB, CANDY + GUM, TOBACCO, NFL / PRO SET, POLYTECHNIC, RETAIL and TITLE SLIDES, among others.
Recognizable brands and subjects observed during a partial examination include IBM, Pop Rocks, Life Savers, Beech-Nut Gum, Pine Bros. Cough Drops, Bausch & Lomb / ReNu, Black & Decker, Texas Instruments, Team NFL / Super Bowl XXV, Burry Scooter-Pie and numerous additional advertising, packaging, retail-display and corporate-design projects.
Included is the book packing design from 1983, which references many Gaylord’s finish products (denoted with his handwriting), which are on some of the present transparencies.
Particularly significant are several original period transparencies whose mounts contain direct handwritten designer attribution to Gaylord Adams, including dated examples associated with Life Savers and Burry Scooter-Pie. These provide original internal documentation connecting specific design work to Adams.
The archive contains multiple photographic formats. In addition to the numerous mounted 35mm transparencies, there are larger-format professional color transparencies, including finished product, packaging and retail-display photography. Examples include a large transparency documenting a Team NFL candy retail-display program featuring Super Bowl XXV commemorative chocolates, as well as Bausch & Lomb ReNu packaging/product photography.
Professional photographic production is represented throughout the archive, including period laboratory mounts and materials from New York photographic services. Some transparencies are specifically marked “DUPLICATE TRANSPARENCY,” reflecting their use within a working professional archive.
Also included is original archival/storage material bearing the firm’s identification:
Gaylord Adams/Don Flock & Associates Inc.
521 Fifth Ave.
Suite 2301
New York, N.Y. 10175
A Kodak Carousel Transvue 140 slide tray/storage system with original Kodak instructions retained with the collection is also included.
Also included is a small group of vintage floppy disks retained with the professional material. The disks have not been examined or read. No representation is made regarding their contents, readability, functionality or relationship to any particular client or project. They are included to preserve potentially related archival material and original context.
More than 1,000 transparencies/slides are present. The archive has not been exhaustively researched, inventoried or digitized. Duplicate/repeated images are present alongside different views, presentations and project sequences, as would be expected within a working professional design archive.
The photographs shown represent only a sampling of the complete collection.
IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTION NOTE: The presence of a company, brand or product within the archive does not by itself establish that Gaylord Adams personally designed every item pictured. Specific designer attribution is stated only where supported by original labeling or other documentation.
The collection is being offered intact in order to preserve its surviving professional organization, provenance and project context.
An unusual primary-source archive documenting several decades of New York advertising, package design, corporate graphics and consumer-product presentation.
Please examine all photographs carefully for contents and condition. Sold as one complete archival collection.
