Vintage 9” Native American / Southwestern hand-crafted clay Sun Face plaque with an unusual heavily textured, distressed polychrome finish in blue, reddish brown and white.
The plaque has a raised three-dimensional Sun Face design, irregular hand-shaped scalloped edge, and a very rustic, handmade appearance. The back has a circular wool/felt backing, with a Gilbert Ortega’s Indian Arts label attached to it.
The Ortega operation was a major Native American arts dealer that sold Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and other Southwestern Native American artwork, including pottery, sculptures, rugs and kachinas. Historical references specifically document Ortega’s stores carrying pottery and other Native art.
Measurements: Approximately 9” diameter.
Condition: Vintage/used condition with extensive intentional-looking surface wear, rubbing and age-related finish loss. The rustic, worn appearance is visible throughout. Please examine all photographs carefully.
