VintageNavajo Indian Yei Figures & Cornstalk Weaving or Rug with Label:Red Rock, AZ, Circa 1970's
Thisfine handmade tapestry-woven Navajo textile features four Yei Figures(Holy Beings) alternating with five sacred cornstalks. The YeiFigures are highly stylized with wing-like arms and legs giving theman avian or bird-like character. The significance of this attributeis unknown like most details behind the depiction of the Yei Figureswhich are based on the highly secretive Sand Painting and HealingCeremonies of the Navajo. The black and white upper and lower bordersare outlined and serrated in a manner that is reminiscent of thefeather fletching of arrows.
Thecommercial wool yarns used in this weaving were widely used in the1960's-80's and were popular with weavers because their reliableuniformity allowed much finer and more detailed weaving. There are afew lazy lines within this weaving. This piece retains its originaltrading post tag which, although faded, identifies the origin as RedRock, Arizona, the original price of $460 and the probable date of1975. Unfortunately, the weavers name is illegible. The piece is invery good condition with a small stain in the lower border whichshows on one side only (see photos). The selvages on the top andbottom and the 4 corner tassels are undamaged.
Dimensions: 48" wide, 33-1/2" tall
Condition: Very Good. No breaks, missing stitches, color fading or repairs. Retains the original trading post tag which is partially illegible. There is one small stain in the lower border that shows on one sideonly (see photos)
