Vintage “Our Lady of China” religious artwork by Chinese artist John Lu Hung-Nien, depicting the Madonna and Child in traditional Chinese style.
The artist’s signature appears at the lower left in Chinese symbols with two red seals.
An aged informational label remains attached to the back. It identifies the work as “Our Lady of China,” painted by John Lu Hung-Nien, and describes him as an art instructor at the Catholic Fu-Jen University at Peiping and a convert to Catholicism. The label also states that the work was selected by Thomas Cardinal Tien, Archbishop of Peiping, China, as the official symbol for the “Union of Prayers for the Persecuted Church in China.”
Measures approximately 18.5” x 11” overall.
The artwork has a flat, smooth, glossy/varnished appearance on a rigid panel. I do not know the exact medium, materials, printing process, or method used to create or finish the image, and I am not representing it as an original painting. Good vintage condition overall. There is visible age-related wear to the outer wood/wood-finished surround, including chipping and wear at the corners as photographed. The image itself presents very nicely. Hanging chain remains attached to the back.
