This is a male Chinese guardian lion, often called a “Foo Dog,” identified by the embroidered ball beneath its paw. A female lion would traditionally be depicted with a pup beneath her paw.The ball inside the Foo Dog’s mouth—often called a “pearl of wisdom” or “wishing stone”—symbolizes the lion’s breath and the expulsion of negative energy. This piece also showcases a traditional carving technique in which the ball is carved completely free within the mouth, allowing it to move while remaining securely enclosed.
