Vintage Silver Plated Etrog Box Brick Basketweave Sukkot Judaica Hebrew Inscribe:
$225.00

Offered here is an early-to-mid 20th-century silver-plated oval Etrog Box (Esrog container) designed for the holiday of Sukkot. The body features an embossed brick/basketweave texture raised on four cast foliate cabriole legs. The hinged lid is surmounted by an arched carrying handle and opens to reveal a magnificent raised Hebrew inscription quoting Leviticus 23:40 ("U'lekachtem lachem... peri 'etz hadar"), encapsulating a central relief motif of the Four Species (Arbat HaMinim).

A notable mark of traditional craftsman assembly is the matching bench/batch stamp number 124 die-struck on both the upper and lower hinge leaves, showing hand-fitted workshop production. An exceptional piece of ceremonial Jewish art suitable for collection, holiday use, or display.Item SpecificsMaterial: Silver Plated Base Metal (White Metal / Brass Core)Origin: Continental Europe or Early Israel (Eretz Israel / Bezalel-style motif influence)Age: c. 1910–1940s (Early 20th Century)Dimensions & Weight
  • Width: 6 inches

  • Height: 4.25 inches

  • Weight: 9.8 oz

Condition: Very Good vintage condition. Light surface oxidation, tarnish, and minor silver plating wear consistent with age and ceremonial handling. Hinge mechanism is tight and operates smoothly. The stamped bench/assembly number "124" remains sharp and fully legible on both hinge leaves. Hebrew Inscription & Translation

Lid Text: ולקחתם לכם ... פרי עץ הדר ("U'lekachtem lachem ... peri 'etz hadar")

  • Translation: "And you shall take for yourselves... the fruit of a majestic tree" (Leviticus 23:40), referring directly to the commandment of obtaining an etrog for Sukkot.

Authenticity Assessment

Workmanship & Hinge Assembly: The stamped assembly/bench numbers 124 on both the top and bottom hinge plates confirm custom hand-fitting in a small-batch silversmithing workshop, a key marker of authentic European/Israeli Judaica from the late 19th to mid-20th century rather than mass modern reproduction.

  • Material & Construction: The underlying body is a white metal/brass alloy electroplated with silver. Natural oxidation/patina and minor plating wear around high-contact areas (hinge seams, feet joints) demonstrate authentic age and usage.

  • Motifs: The relief pattern on the lid correctly displays the traditional iconographic arrangement: the etrog fruit flanked by palm branches (lulav), with the biblical Sukkot blessing rendered in period-appropriate relief typography.
