You are offerding on a lot of 13 antique stereoview cards documenting the catastrophic 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée on the island of Martinique — one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in recorded history, which destroyed the city of St. Pierre and killed an estimated 28,000–30,000 people.
This lot includes cards from Underwood & Underwood (New York, London, Toronto, Ottawa) and Keystone View Company, two of the era's most prominent stereoview publishers. Subjects include:
• Dramatic eruption views showing massive ash and smoke plumes rising from the volcano
• General landscape views of the volcano and surrounding terrain
• Aftermath/ruins views of the destroyed city of St. Pierre, including collapsed structures and debris fields
Condition: Cards show typical age wear consistent with their 120+ year age — please examine photos closely for edge wear, toning, and corner condition. One card is in a protective plastic sleeve. All cards have legible captions and publisher imprints on the front and/or back.
Standard stereoview size, approximately 3.5" x 7" each. These were originally viewed through a stereoscope to create a 3D effect. A wonderful addition to any collection of disaster photography, volcanology, Caribbean history, or early photographic ephemera.
