Vintage Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Applique 67” X 77” Hand & Machine Sewn Minor Flaws
Such an amazing quilt. It does have flaws - I have taken photos of all that I found. There is still way more good than bad in this great quilt.
It appears to have been sewn together in matching. Top stitching and appliqués are hand done. Quality work. Quilting pattern shows some to be Baptist Fan. Batting is the heavier cotton that was used on earlier made quilts. It has “bunched” in a few places. Again, less “bunching” than “good” spots.
Of the 42 blocks, I only find 6 where the fabric has worn or has holes in it. The rest look to be in good condition. I did not launder the quilt, so I recommend washing with care to preserve the other
Blocks. I do not think the quilt or fabric is brittle or fragile. I have taken photos of all blocks (in groups), so maybe you can zoom in to see the quality of the appliqués fabric. Fabrics used appear to bee feedsack (or from that era). Appliqué stitches all appear to be in good shape.
The top of the quilt does not have a binding, although the quilt top is sewn together the backing. I think older quilts were made this way. There is some wear along that top seam.
